Since winning the Sony Pix Gateway of Hollywood contest, Bejoy Nambiar has been a hopeful prospect for Hindi cinema. He has delivered entertaining films like “Wazir”, “Kaarwan”, and “Taish”. His web series “The Family Man” has also been well-received by audiences. However, with his recent web series “Kala”, he has truly showcased his cinematic prowess, taking the grammar of cinema to new heights.

His new film “Dange” (known as “Por” in Tamil) seems to further highlight his cinematic skills, where his storytelling takes a backseat, and his cinematic finesse and grammar shine brighter.

Dange Movie

The story somewhat resembles what audiences have seen in Hindi cinema with films like “Haasil” and “Gulaal”. Gulzar also made a similar film called “Mere Apne” years ago. These stories often revolve around the unruly youth on college campuses, and their anger seems to hollow them out. Student politics is no longer as prevalent in the country as it used to be in college campuses in the past, and perhaps Bejoy Nambiar has finally seen the real campus after a while.

His film “Dange” also tells the story of a clash between two strong students, their ego, strength, and courage. The only problem here is that neither of the two protagonists of the film appears as students from any perspective. They both look so mature that viewers don’t see any connection with the story of the film at first glance.

The problem with the film “Dange” is that most of the time is spent in decorating the backgrounds of the characters rather than advancing the story. This film about campus politics reaches the classroom so late that by then, viewers assume that Bejoy Nambiar might have forgotten the backdrop in which he crafted the story of his film in the rush to showcase his directorial skills. He remains engrossed in building the romantic encounters of the heroines. He appears busy in constructing images on the screen to showcase his talent. And in this entire process, the story, which could have been a love triangle, falls apart before it even gets a chance to take shape.

Harshvardhan Rane and Ehan Bhat both appear trapped in their respective characters. Neither of them seems like college students. They neither research nor study. As for other students, they seemed to be looking for an excuse for chaos.

In this story of ego and youth, there is also a character named Rishika. The business of intoxicants runs parallel to this. Actress TJ Bhanu, who has shown glimpses of the future in the film “Afwaah” and the series “Guns and Roses”, also stars. She plays the role of Gayatri, who runs the NGO. She fights for the students’ rights. And, contrary to this axis, Siddhi is present on the opposite axis. They have an old rivalry, and there’s a new fight as well.
